Will a remap void my warranty? (UK 2026)
The honest answer is: it depends on what fails and whether the failure is map-related. Here's how warranties really work after a remap.
The phrase 'remapping voids your warranty' gets thrown around a lot. The reality under UK consumer law is more nuanced.
What the law says
Under the UK Consumer Rights Act, a manufacturer can only refuse a warranty claim if the modification caused or contributed to the failure. They cannot blanket-void your warranty for the rest of the vehicle just because you remapped it.
If your aircon compressor fails, that has nothing to do with the engine map. They have to honour it.
If your turbo blows on a Stage 2 car, they will likely refuse — and a court would probably side with them.
What dealers usually do
Dealers detect remaps via flash counter on the ECU. If they spot a remap, they may quote you for the work even on unrelated failures. You can push back legally — but it's a fight, and not everyone wants one.
Practical advice
- If your car is under 12 months old and you're worried, wait until the manufacturer warranty expires.
- Buy a tuner-friendly extended warranty (Mapfre/Warrantywise specifically allow remaps if declared).
- Keep the original map on USB so we can flash back to stock before any dealer visit.
We give every Cambridge customer their stock map on USB — flash back, dealer visit, flash forward, takes 20 minutes.
