Will remapping affect my insurance? (UK 2026 guide)
Yes it affects your premium. No, it doesn't have to be brutal. Here's the realistic 2026 picture for Cambridge drivers.
If you take one thing from this article: declare the remap to your insurer. Hiding it doesn't save you money — it voids your cover when you need it most.
How much does a remap add?
- Stage 1 on a mainstream car (Golf, Octavia, A3): typically £30–£90/year on top of your existing premium.
- Stage 1 on a hot hatch (Type R, Megane RS): £80–£200/year extra.
- Stage 2 with bolt-ons: usually £150–£400 extra and not all insurers will quote.
Insurers that quote remaps
From customer feedback at our Cambridge workshop, the friendliest UK insurers for tuned cars right now are Adrian Flux, A-Plan, Sky Insurance, Performance Direct and Greenlight. Most high-street brands (Direct Line, Aviva, Churchill) will refuse outright.
How to make the call go smoothly
- Have the make/model/year and BHP figure ready.
- Say 'ECU remap, software only' for Stage 1 — that's the magic phrase.
- Mention if you have a modification certificate (we provide one).
We've seen plenty of Cambridge customers actually save money by switching to a specialist insurer at the same time as remapping. Don't assume your existing provider is the cheapest.
